World Poetry Day

In 1999, UNESCO makes a decision. Every year on March 21, people celebrate World Poetry Day. The first World Poetry Day takes place in 2000 in Paris.

The word "poetry" comes from the Greek word poieo. It means "to create, to make, to build, to construct". People believe that the most ancient hymn-poems are created in the 23rd century BC.

Today, on this day, poetry concerts, author readings, conferences and seminars take place all over the world. They are dedicated to poets and their work. Presentations of new poetry literature also take place. People award literary prizes. These events happen in cultural institutions, educational institutions and creative groups.

In Russia, the awarding of the national literary prizes "Poet of the Year" and "Writer of the Year" is timed to World Poetry Day. The Russian Union of Writers establishes these prizes. Its goal is to find new talented authors. These authors can contribute to modern Russian literature.
